Packaging Guidelines for Freight Shipments
Proper packaging is essential for protecting your freight during transit. Carriers require that freight be packaged to withstand normal handling conditions and to prevent damage to other shipments.
General Packaging Tips
- Use sturdy, undamaged boxes, crates, or pallets.
- Fill empty spaces with packing material to prevent shifting.
- Securely seal all cartons with high‑quality packing tape.
- Clearly label each piece with the destination address and handling instructions.
Palletizing Freight
- Stack cartons evenly with no overhang.
- Place heavier items on the bottom.
- Use shrink wrap to secure freight to the pallet.
- Add corner boards for extra stability.
Crating Freight
- Use durable, heat‑treated wood or approved materials.
- Ensure crates are strong enough to support the load.
- Close and secure all crate openings.
Special Considerations
- For fragile items, add cushioning and mark “FRAGILE.”
- For hazardous materials, comply with DOT packaging requirements.
- For oversized freight, ensure packaging supports lifting by forklift.
